Deschutes National Forest, Oregon, by Lucy Hamilton, FS Archaeologist What was going to be a one-time project during to celebrate Oregon Archaeology Week became a three-year project and a wonderful tool for introducing archaeology to visitors to Lava Lands Discovery Center. Lava Lands is home to Lava Butte, a cinder cone formed approximately 7, years ago and the catalyst for Benham Falls. This is an awe inspiring geologic wonder and well worth the visit. One can traverse the trails and/or take the bus to the top of the cone and walk the rim TripAdvisor reviews.
There are lots of great options in the Bend area, but we are fans of a cave and it was a hot day, so we decided to check out the Lava River Cave. It is located in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument 12 miles south of Bend just off Highway 97 in the Deschutes National Forest. Drive through winding roads and spectacular lava flows.
